Report - December 22 - 28, 2006 - Winter Duck Season Opens |
Much cooler misty weather was ushered in with the cold fronts this week. Ducks are again dropping out of the sky almost as far as you can see. With well planted feed plots and plenty of water, we "host", (feed and roost) well. During the colder weather we see much better daytime population retention
Geese are running strong within the last two weeks. Feed plots are still in good shape and water is better than it has ever been with more rain in the forecast. Prospects look good throughout the remainder of the winter waterfowl season here.
Mike Jolley:
"Saturday and Sunday we watched new birds pile in from as high as you could see. It was awesome, flocks of hundreds as far as you could see, what a sight! This week should be great hunting with new cold fronts and rain coming in."
Looking forward to next year, we're planning on expanding our feed plot program for both waterfowl and upland game birds. We are looking at adding corn, Arkansas Rice and 50 acres of sunflowers. We are also looking at a test planting of a newer variety of millet that is reported to have a shorter stronger stalk, shorter maturity life and a higher yield. This newer variety can be planted as late as September, in the North Texas Region. |
